What is Geography?

The word Geography is derived from Greek and its literal meaning is ‘to write about the earth’. Geography as a subject seeks to understand the world – both the physic and human elements. Effectively Geographers study how things came to be as they are, and why. Another aspect of Geography is to look at the spatial connection between the earth, its inhabitants and places.

Is Geology the Same as Geography?

In short, no! Geographers tend to study the surface of the earth and can be divided roughly into two categories – human geography an physical geography. Geology, however, is about looking deeper into the earth – studying the internal processes of the earth such as volcanoes and tectonics, and also studying ancient periods on the planet and the effects of them – sometime even billions of years ago.

How Do I Become a Geographer?

The first step is to secure good grades in Geography so you can go on to study it at degree level. A University degree in Geography is an important first step in becoming a Geographer. With a Bachelors degree it is possible to enter diectrly into a verity of fields of work. For those seeing to go on to teach, be a GIS specialist, cartographer or even to work in the government, a master’s degree in Geography is a very helpful tool. Should you wish to become a lecturer or enter in high-level research positions, think-tanks or corporations, you would most likely need to have a Phd.
